1 Creating Reflective Space
1.1 Learning Objective
Create virtual storage spaces in which to save your work, and a journal in order to be able to reflect on and share your learning journey in the IIIF Labyriiinth.

1.2 Summary
Before you enter the IIIF Labyriiinth, we need to make sure you have prepared for your journey.
We will use a variety interactive reflective spaces on our journey, but first you are going to create some to stash your stuuff, and a digital journal in which you can record and reflect on what you learn.
1.3 Workbench
First thing’s first, if you haven’t already, sign-up for a GitHub account - it’s free and the IIIF Workbench will be able to store your IIIF files there so you can make use of them.
Next, create your IIIF Workbench.
Follow these steps:
1. Open the IIIF Workbench in a new browser tab.
2. Login using your GutHub account.
3. Click the ‘Authorize’ button.
4. Click the ‘Create Project’ button.
5. Give your project a unique name.
6. You’ll come back and use this on jounrey in the IIIF Labyriiinth, so you might want to keep the tab open.
1.4 MixTape
Next, you might want to prepare a IIIF Mixtape for you jounrey. You can use this stash your favourite IIIF resources for later.
Follow these steps:
1. In a new browser tab, open the IIIF MixTape.
2. Click the ‘New Collection’ button.
3. Enter a name for your Mixtape, enter your email address and tick the T’s&C’s.
4. Click the ‘Create Collection’ button.
5. You will shortly recieve an email with a link to your very own IIIF Mixtape - Keep it safe!
1.5 Journal
The last thing you need to prepare is your Journal. To create this, you are going to use a tool called Exhibit.
Follow these steps:
1. In a new browser tab, go to: Exhibit.so.
2. Click the ‘Create an Exhibit ->’ button.
3. Fill in the form using these options:
- Template: Select ‘Slides’
- Title: [Your Name]‘s IIIF Labyrinth Journal
- Author: [Your Name]
- Description:
- Rights (optional):
- Access: Select ’Public’ -> You can password protect if you’d rather, but make sure you remember the password!
- Allow Duplication: You can untick this if you want.
- I’m not a robot: Tick
- Ts&Cs: Tick
4. Click ‘Create Exhibit’.
Next, find a cover image!
Follow these steps:
1. In another browser tab, navigate to this Mixtape of IIIF Examples.
2. Pick one of the items that you think looks interesting, and click on the ‘IIIF’ logo for it.
3. A page of ‘code’ will open. This is JSON, it might look scary but you only need the URL! Go ahead and ‘copy’ the URL.
4. Go back to your ‘Exhibit’ tab, and click ‘+ Add Item’ button
5. Paste the URL into the ‘Import’ box in the ‘+ Add Item’ dialogue window and click ‘Import’.
6. You should see the item appear in a zoomable viewer on the right hand side of the screen. Find the image you want to use using the thumbnails. 7. On the left-hand side of the screen, click the ‘+’ button directly under your title/description box.
8. Type: ‘This is my front cover image.’ -> if you like, you can also add a brief sentence explaining what drew you to this image.
9. Click the ‘tick’ button.
Next, you need to ‘Share’ your journal: * Click the ‘Share’ button in the bottom left of the screen. * In the window you should see two ‘Copy’ buttons. The top one also has a drop-down option that can be set to ‘edit’ OR ‘view’. * You need to copy both of these URLs and save them somewhere you can easily access again. You could send yourself an email containing the links. For this lesson we want to share our journals, so navigate another browser tab to this GoogleDoc. * Once you have saved your links somewhere, you can close (‘X’) the ‘Share’ window.
Keep this ‘Exhibit’ page open in a browser tab whilst we undertake the other exercises, and we will return to it and add more content later.
