Preface
Images have become ubiquitous in the digital age, and IIIF – the International Image Interoperability Framework – re-imagines what you can do with them, and a lot more besides.

IIIF can be quite complex to explain, and often also to use, but some of the principles at play are strikingly simple. You don’t really need to worry too much about what IIIF means to start using it, you just need to know what you can do with it to begin understanding it. But at its most basic level, it means that you can access and, importantly, use a lot of digital content from hundreds of institutions across the world.
Why a labyrinth?
Labyrinths are a great way to inspire and empower you to navigate as you start your own IIIF journey, they are a reflective space ‘in the spirit of good pedagogy’ (Sellers and Moss 2016, 9).
The IIIF Labyriiinth is an open educational resource for introducing and teaching IIIF Literacy, Methods and Tools. It has been constructed by Andy Corrigan as part of his CDH Methods Fellowship 2025/6.
